While Americans are obviously obsessed with automobiles, these days there are no television dramas that feature cars as their focal point. It makes us pine for the days of the Dukes of Hazzard and the General Lee, a 1969 Dodge Charger that more often than not was totally trashed by the end of every episode. Hundreds of Chargers were wrecked in the pursuit of good television, making a real survivor a rare find.

Hemmings Auto Blog reports that just such a survivor will be heading to auction later this month though. This original survivor stunt car is one of just a handful of survivors from the show’s peak years, and while it isn’t in perfect condition, it would be a great addition to any car collection.

While it isn’t known exactly how many Chargers were wrecked during filming, it is estimated to be well north of 300 ‘69 Chargers that were totaled during the six years the Dukes of Hazzard was on television. With 145 total episodes, that is more than two cars per episode…though some vehicles, like this survivor, were used for less intense stunts that allowed them to survive the interceding decades. 

Initial auction estimates peg the sale price at between $55,000 and $65,000, half the price a never-used General Lee commanded last year, and significantly less than the $450,000 paid for a restored General Lee back in 2008. At that price, this piece of television and musclecar history is a veritable bargain, and it’s a car you wouldn’t mind taking out to the local meet for other Dukes fans to fawn over. It’s even been signed by some of the original cast members, adding extra coolness and value.
