During the heyday of the muscle car wars, many men made a name for themselves by modifying GM muscle cars. Names like Berger, Nickey, Mr. Norms, Baldwin, and of course Yenko became household icons. Yet, after emissions and fuel economy became more important than horsepower, many of these men went on hiatus. In 1972, Don Yenko stopped selling modified cars, though between then and his death in 1987, he still tinkered from time to time on certain cars, while still selling plenty of performance parts.
One of his few modified automobiles made during this time was a one-of-one 1975 L88 Trans Am, and this extremely low-mileage car has found its way on to eBay.
According to the eBay advertisement, back in 1975 Michael Carcella and his father ordered a brand new Pontiac Trans Am with the 400 engine and 4-speed transmission. As we all know though, even these big engines were restricted by primitive emissions equipment and ridiculously low compression that killed horsepower. Unsatisfied with the Pontiac’s performance, Carcella took his Trans Am to Don Yenko.
Yenko was, at the time, dyno testing L88 engines for GM. Yenko suggested they stuff one of these engines into the Trans Am. Carcella agreed, and over the next few days the whole car was heavily modified to accept the 427 cubic inch Chevy engine. Kustom Headers, 4:10 gears, and a plethora of other modifications were made to this Pontiac. It was the only Trans Am L88 Yenko ever built according to the auction listing. It has had four owners, and has just 13,2768 miles on the 500-plus horsepower engine. The rest of the car is in pristine condition too. It may be some time before we see this car surface again, so get a good long look at it.
