At the height of the muscle car craze, there seemed to be no ceiling on how fast and powerful cars could get. While the Big Three’s factories were busy churning out street-legal race cars, many of the aftermarket shops that sprung up in this era were taking these cars to a whole new level. Big spoilers, big engines, and big power was the name of the game, and everybody wanted to play. Few names were as well known as Baldwin Chevrolet’s Baldwin Motion program, who produced just a handful of raucous cars that took were wild in every way.

One of these cars, a one-of-twelve Phase III GT Corvette, which was bought by a doctor back in 1971, has been found, restored, and is going to be unveiled soon according to Bangshift.

What was a Baldwin-Motion Phase III GT Corvette? Only the wildest ride money could afford in 1971, that’s what. It was light, powered by a big block 454 engine, and featured just about every go-fast part in the catalog. The LS6 454 engine would be torn down and rebuilt to LS7 specifications, including open chamber aluminum heads, a hot hydraulic camshaft from GM, and a large Holley carburetor. With a 12.5:1 compression ratio, this Corvette easily made 500 horsepower, which is what lured Dr. Henry Rollings to it. He bought the car in 1971 and drove it all the way home.

Not just any transmission would hold that kind of power, so a stronger version of the Turbo 400 transmission was installed, as were the 4.88 gears that helped the GT Corvette dip into the 10’s. It also got a slick new front and rear end, hood scoop, and an evil “come hither” look. Price when new was over $16,000, which was about the cost of a new home back in 1971. In 2008, Adam Tuckman bought the neglected Corvette from Dr. Rolling’s family, and the only work that has been done to it is a new paint job. This rare Corvette is set to debut at the Muscle Car and Corvettes Nationals in Chicago this November.
